McGowan Starts 2 games in 26 hours, Ravens to Series

Kevin McGowan (Nashua, NH) helped Franklin Pierce University win three games in two day, starting two of them and notching a complete game win over Pace.  McGowan hurled 11 innings allowing just the one run over the two days to improve to 7-1 with a 2.87 ERA.

McGowan along with Northeast 10 All-Conference First Team 1B Zack Mathieu (Derry, NH),  OF Mike Skilton (Bedford, NH), Spencer Damon (Merrimack, NH) and Josh Martin (Lewiston, ME) are all Showcase League alums.

Showcase League returns to FPU this fall on August 31 and September 1st.

Carman Sets Record- Huskies to World Series

Logan Carman

Harwich, Ma. –  Showcase League alum Logan Carman (Newfields, NH) threw his second shut out of the New England regional tournament to help send the University of Southern Maine to the NCAA World Series in Appleton Wisconsin.   In the process Carman sets a USM record with his 12th win of the season.

The lefty improves to 12-0 on the season with a 1.62 ERA, he was recently named the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year and with his post season performance was named to the New England Regional All-Tournament Team.

Logan is one of several Showcase League alums who will be making the trip with USM to the NCAA D3 World Series, others include Little East Co-Player of the Year Tucker White (Deerfield, NH),  Sophomore Jake Glauser (Goffstown, NH), and Freshmen LHP Dan Kinnon (Londonderry, NH).

Showcase League makes its annual trip to USM on October 12th, 2013 when the program travels to Gorham, Maine for a triple header.

Around Division 1

 

With just over a month left in the Division 1 NCAA regular season we decided to take a look around the country and see how some of Showcase League’s alumni are doing in the 2013 season.

Matt MacDowell Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College- Sophomore Matt MacDowell (Falmouth, ME) has started 18 games for The Big Green hitting .308 with a home run so far this season, he has also thrown out 4 potential base stealers from behind the plate.

Northeastern University- Sophomore catcher Josh Treff (Salem, NH) has started 14 games for NEU on the season.  Treff is a former New Hampshire player of the year and Showcase League All-Star.

Canisius College- Junior OF Ryan Coppinger (Dover, NH) has started 85 games through 2.5 seasons for the Griffs.  Coppinger hit .345 with 21 runs scored in the 2012 season.

 

 

URI RHP Cole Warren

 

University of Rhode Island-   The Rams have been annual hosts for Showcase League baseball in the fall and have landed some of the leagues best young players over the years including several commits for the 2013 class. Sophomore RHP Cole Warren (Bedford, NH), Freshmen OF Jesse Lee (Bristol, RI) and former Showcase League Pitcher of the Year (2011) and Offensive Player of the Year (2010) Ben Wessel (Scarborough, Maine) who is the only player in league history to win both of our end of season awards are all members of the current Rams roster.

Freshmen LHP Steven Moyers (East Longmeadow, MA) is third on the team in innings pitched with a 2-1 record, 2.42 ERA in his first collegiate season.

 

Central Connecticut State University- Sophomore Catcher Ryan Beal (Goffstown, NH) has appeared in 17 games for the Blue Devils and recently hit his first Division 1 home run.

New Jersey Technical Institute-  Freshmen Nick Swim (St. Albans, VT) has started all 27 games during his rookie campaign for the highlanders hitting .253 with four stolen bases.

University of Hartford- Freshmen RHP Jake Mellin (Nashua, NH) has already appeared in 10 games as a reliever for the Hawks.

 

BC LHP Nick Poore

Sophomore LHP Nick Poore (Salem, NH) has already logged a lot of innings in his young career.  Poore appeared in 17 games as a freshmen including 2 starts for the Eagles with a 2-0 record.   He has already appeared in 12 games to date for the 2013 season.  Nick was the 2009 Showcase League Pitcher of the Year.

Joining him at BC is former Showcase League All-Star and four team All-State player in the State of Maine Freshmen Luke Fernandes (Marshwood, ME).

 

South Dakota State University-  Freshmen INF Cody Sharrow (Burlington, VT) was a 2 time Showcase League All-Star.  Sharrow has appeared in 6 games with 3 starts this season for the Jacks.

 

 

ETSU LHP Josh Jacques

East Tennessee State University-  Freshmen LHP Josh Jacques (Somersworth, NH).  Jacques has appeared in 8 games including 2 starts for the Bucs so far in 2013.   Jacques was an All-State selection in New Hampshire.

NE-10 Impact

Northeast 10 Baseball

The Northeast 10 is the arguably premier DII Baseball conference in the country, and Showcase League has a long standing history with the top New England programs in this prestigious wood bat conference.

 

Annual Showcase League host school, and site of the 2013 opening weekend Franklin Pierce is always one of the top programs in the country and always features plenty of Showcase League names.

Junior 1b Zach Mathieu (Derry, NH) was named 2012 NCBWA East Region Player of the Year, Daktronics East Region Player of the Year, ABCA East Region Player of the Year and a second team All-American during his sophomore campaign at FPU.   Mathieu is currently hitting .361 with 5 HR, and 26 RBI for the Ravens.

Junior RHP Kevin McGowan (Nashua, NH) has established himself as one of the top arms in the conference posting a 3-0 record with 35 strikeouts in 38 innings to date this season.

Sophomore OF Mike Skilton (Bedford, NH), and Freshmen RHPs Spencer Damon (Merrimack, NH) and Josh Martin (Oak Hill, ME) are some of the younger alums on the FPU roster.   With a handful of commits in the class of 2013 Showcase League will continue to have faces in the Raven uniform for years to come.

 

 

SNHU Baseball

The Southern New Hampshire University Penmen not only roster several Showcase League alumni players, but also a couple of coaches.  Assistant Coach Pat Austin was one of the original coaches to help start the league and Scott Strong spent one year on the Showcase League staff before joining his alma mater SNHU in the dugout.

The current Penmen roster includes Junior Catcher Tyler Poisson(Rochester, NH), Freshmen RHP Joe McCarthy (Nashua, NH) and Sophomore RHPs Curtis Hamilton (Lowell, MA) and Lucas Olen (Bedford, NH).  McCarthy has recently posted his first collegiate win and has a 3.12 ERA in his freshmen campaign.

 

 

 

Saint Anselm

The annual host of the New England Fall Classic, Saint Anselm College has a young and exciting roster of Showcase League alums.  New to the St. A’s coaching staff is former SL coach Eddy Coulombe moving from the high school varsity ranks to join the Hawks in 2013.

Junior Dan Legasse (Londonderry, NH)  the 2009 Showcase League Offensive Player of the Year continues to solidify himself as a reliable bat in the order and is currently second on the team in hitting at .313.

Sophomore Joe Morin (Salem, NH) has shown power and speed with 21 RBI, 3 triples and 6 doubles through 31 games in 2013.

Impact freshmen arms Tom Hudon (Merrimack, NH), Clayton Welch (Manchester, NH), and Paul Trabbuco (Salem, NH) have all seen significant innings in their rookie campaigns.  Hudon leading the bunch with 2 wins and 22 Ks in 30+ innings of work.

Sophomore Zack Husband (Bedford, NH) and Freshmen Catcher Allan McQuarrie (Salem, NH) are also seeing significant playing time.

 

UMass Lowell

The UMass Lowell Riverhawks have recently announced they will be moving to Division 1 for the 2014 season.  Lowell has been the hosts to the past 3 Showcase League All-Star games plus regular season games for the program.

Sophomore Pat Parker (Merrimack, NH)- 2010 Showcase League Offensive Player of the Year-  who was an All-American last year for Northern Essex Community College continues to hit for UML.  Parker is hitting .316 in 27 games so far this season.

Sophomore RHP Shane Beauchemin (Manchester, NH) has a minuscule 2.18 ERA in 41+ innings while posting a 5-0 record for the Riverhawks.

Junior RHP Garrett Cole missed all of last season with injury, in his sophomore campaign he finished with a 7-1 record and a 0.82 ERA • Pitched 65.2 innings and registered 57 strikeouts.  Garrett has started 8 games for UML to date in 2013.

Sophomore Ryan Gendron (Nashua, NH) and Freshmen Louis Tarantino (Nashua, NH) continue to develop as potential future impact players for UMass.

 

Also around the NE-10-

Sophomore RHP Connor Root (Nashua, NH) has appeared in 10 games going 2-0 in 25+ innings of work for Bentley University.

Freshmen RHP Ryan Gancarz (Bedford, NH) has appeared in 2 games for Bentley University.

Freshmen OF Derek Reed (Lowell, MA) has started all 32 games for The College of Saint Rose.

Sophomore OF Joe Breen (Nashua, NH) has started 13 games for Southern Connecticut State University.

Freshmen RHP Kevin Guild (Essex Jct. VT) has appeared in 6 games for Saint Michael’s College.

Little East Impact

Little East Baseball

The Little East Conference is known as one of the top division 3 baseball conferences in the country, consistently sending multiple teams to the NCAA regional tournament with previous national champions University of Southern Maine and Eastern Connecticut State University.  Showcase League has established relationships with the top schools in the conference developing a pipeline that brings some of the best talent in New England to these institutions.

Here are some of the Showcase League alumni making noise around the LEC in 2013.

 

USM Baseball

Annual host the University of Southern Maine features several Showcase League alums on their current roster.   Tucker White (Coe Brown, NH) returns for his senior year after being named aDIII All American in 2012.  White is already off to a hot start and is currently 2nd in the conference in hitting at .488 and 2nd in RBIs with 27.

Settling in as one of the Huskies top weekend starters is Logan Carmen (Newfield, NH).  Logan currently leads the LEC in wins with 5 and is 2nd in ERA at 1.56.

Sophomore starting OF Jake Glauser (Goffstown, NH) is hitting .271 in his second season of college ball following up on a terrific freshmen year.

 

Keene State

Annual host school Keene State features a young and talented team for the 2013 season, with no shortage of Showcase League alumni.  Sr. Chris Crutcher (Londonderry, NH) has positioned himself a weekend starter bringing big game experience and a power arm to the rotation.

Sophomore Transfer Alex Fiste (Lynn, MA/ U Hartford) will see innings on the mound and some at bats as a two way threat.

Freshmen RHPs Eddie Dionne (Concord, NH) and Ted Christie (Nashua, NH) were two of the best arms in New Hampshire last year both earning All-State honors.   Add freshmen Bobby Graham (Amherst, NH) and John Poissant (Manchester, NH) and the Owls have a deep connection with Showcase League.

 

UMass Dartmouth

UMD has a collection of Showcase League alumni from all over New England.   Starting with Sophomore 1B Alex Newton (Saco, Maine) who earned rookie of the week honors as a freshmen in the LEC while leading the Corsairs in hits and RBIs in his first year.

Freshmen RHP Matt Russell (Townsend, MA) has been one of their most reliable pitchers in 2013 and recently notched his first conference win against Keene State.

Freshmen OF Connor Shaw (Goffstown, NH) has been starting for UMD and is hitting over .300 in the young season.  Shaw recently hit his first collegiate  home run(3 run HR) in a 20-6 drubbing of Salve Regina.

Freshmen INF Reece Tanguay (Essex Junction, VT) has also made an immediate impact on the team hitting .375 while platooning as a left handed bat in the lineup.

 

The Plymouth State Panthers have no shortage of coaches in the Showcase League ranks Steve Campo, Nick Jaskolka, Dylan Mullin, Mike Lynch, Bryant Lausberg to name a few the coaching tree for PSU in the league is very deep.   Plymouth coming off its first trip to the LEC tournament in a decade also features several alumni.

Senior OF Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, NH)has been a mainstay in the Panthers lineup for several seasons now.  Transfer 3B Brandon Cox (Nashua, NH/Merrimack College) has cemented himself in the heart of the Panther lineup this season and is off to a hot start hitting .338 through 21 games.

Transfer RHPs Cody Gilchrest (Tyngsborough, MA)and Josh Young (Somersworth, NH) have been seeing a lot of innings, with Gilchrest making weekend starts in LEC games so far.   Both pitchers are posting sub 4.00 ERAs in their first seasons in green and white.

Sophomore Dan Armstrong (Danville, NH) is hitting .300 just past the half way mark in the season with his name showing up in boxscores in the middle of the order.

Sophomore short stop Paul Reny (South Portland, Me) was among the lead leaders in hitting in the LEC at .469 before an injury put his season in jeopardy 9 games in.

 

Little East coaches have been very hospitable to the Showcase League over the years and we like to think that it has paid dividends in their lineups.  Our staff is committed to continue to grow these relationships and return to their campuses on an annual basis.

Pinkerton Academy names Steve Campo Varsity Baseball Coach.

Merrimack High School names Nick Jaskolka Varsity Baseball Coach.

Southern New Hampshire University names Pat Austin Assistant Baseball Coach.

St. Anselm College names Ed Coulombe Assistant Baseball Coach.

UMass Dartmouth names Rian McCarthy Assistant Baseball Coach.

UMass Dartmouth names Marc Ouimet Assistant Baseball Coach.

2012 Season Conclusion

NH Team Black 2012 Champions

The 2012 Showcase League season came to a close this past weekend with all 12 teams in action at three host sites; UMass Lowell, SNHU, and St. Anselm College.

Carrabba’s Car Side Carryout NH Team Black claimed the 2012 New England Fall Classic Championship with a win over 900 Degrees Pizzeria NH Purple 5-2.  (Box Score)  Nashua South Senior Nick Reed was named tournament MVP putting together big games in both the first round and championship game.   Team Purple fell short of the chance to repeat in the rematch of their 7-1 victory over Team Black in the “Hard 90 Rivalry”.

The top four teams in the standings were given a chance to play one extra bonus game by facing off with each other in play in games on Saturday where NH Team Purple defeated Bank of Maine Royal and NH Team Black beat Northeast Credit Union Seacoast Blue.

2012 New England Fall Classic

New England Fall Classic

The 2012 New England Fall Classic Championship game will be held at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, NH on Sunday 10/28 at 1:00pm.   Pre-Game warm ups including batting practice will begin at 11:00am.

*Consolation game originally scheduled for 10:30am has been cancelled*

The championship game will be the conclusion of the 2012 Showcase League season and is a rematch of the “Hard 90 Rivalry” game played at St. Anselm’s College on October 21st.  NH Purple (sponsored by 900 Degrees Pizzeria) came out on top in the regular season match up- showing up in purple camouflage uniforms, and piling up 7 runs on 9 hits.  NH Team Black (Sponsored by Carraba’s Car Side Carry-Out)was held to only 1 run.

Last season NH Team Purple won the New England Fall Classic defeating Massachusetts Orange 8-7 (Box score) in a 7 inning game scoring the go ahead run in the top of the 7th and holding on for the win.   Last year’s Fall Classic MVP Dan Morin is among several players returning to the Fall Classic Championship for a second run at the title. Jake Cassidy, Jake Welch, Nathan Rossi, and John McQuarrie all return along with Coach’s Dylan Mullin and Ed Coulombe.

NH Team Black is returning to the Fall Classic Championship game for the first time since 2008 and this will be their first time since Showcase League’s expansion.  In 2008 NH Team Black’s Chris Debonis threw a no-hitter in the championship game to defeat NH Team Red who would later become NH Team Purple.  (records/awards)

Yesterday at UMass Lowell NH Team Purple defeated Maine Royal (The Bank of Maine)  6-3 to advance to the championship game.   Meanwhile at SNHU NH Team Black bats came alive as they defeated NECU Seacoast Blue 9-0.

No matter who wins the cup today the 2012 Showcase League championship will go to one of the league’s original four New Hampshire based teams.
